This simple box project introduces basic box joinery using rabbets and dados. Perfect for storage or gift-giving, it teaches fundamental joinery skills that apply to larger projects.
| PIECE | QUANTITY | DIMENSIONS |
|---|---|---|
| Front and back | 2 | 1/2" x 4" x 10" |
| Sides | 2 | 1/2" x 4" x 7" |
| Bottom | 1 | 1/4" plywood 7" x 9-1/2" |
| Lid | 1 | 1/2" x 8" x 11" |
Cut all pieces to size according to the cut list.
Cut 1/4" rabbets on the inside bottom edges of all four sides to accept the plywood bottom.
Cut 1/2" rabbets on the ends of the front and back pieces to create corner joints.
Dry-fit all pieces to ensure proper fit. The bottom should slide into the rabbets.
Sand all interior surfaces before assembly—it's much easier now than later.
Apply glue to rabbets and assemble the box. Clamp until dry.
Once dry, sand all exterior surfaces smooth.
Cut or sand a small bevel on the top edge of the box for a refined look.
Position hinges on the back edge and mark screw locations.
Pre-drill hinge screw holes to prevent splitting.
Attach hinges to box, then to lid.
Apply your chosen finish to all surfaces.
Sand progressively to 220 grit. Apply a clear finish like Danish oil or polyurethane to showcase the wood grain. For a painted look, use primer followed by 2-3 coats of paint, sanding lightly between coats.
