CUT LIST

Front and back21/2" x 4" x 10"
Sides21/2" x 4" x 7"
Bottom11/4" plywood 7" x 9-1/2"
Lid11/2" x 8" x 11"

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1

Cut all pieces to size according to the cut list.

2

Cut 1/4" rabbets on the inside bottom edges of all four sides to accept the plywood bottom.

3

Cut 1/2" rabbets on the ends of the front and back pieces to create corner joints.

4

Dry-fit all pieces to ensure proper fit. The bottom should slide into the rabbets.

5

Sand all interior surfaces before assembly—it's much easier now than later.

6

Apply glue to rabbets and assemble the box. Clamp until dry.

7

Once dry, sand all exterior surfaces smooth.

8

Cut or sand a small bevel on the top edge of the box for a refined look.

9

Position hinges on the back edge and mark screw locations.

10

Pre-drill hinge screw holes to prevent splitting.

11

Attach hinges to box, then to lid.

12

Apply your chosen finish to all surfaces.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Use a dado blade stack for clean, flat-bottomed rabbets.
  • Test your dado setup on scrap wood first.
  • Keep glue away from the bottom panel—it needs to float to allow for wood movement.
  • Consider adding feet to the bottom for a more finished look.
  • Add a small catch or magnetic closure to keep the lid closed.

FINISHING

Sand progressively to 220 grit. Apply a clear finish like Danish oil or polyurethane to showcase the wood grain. For a painted look, use primer followed by 2-3 coats of paint, sanding lightly between coats.
