PROJECT OVERVIEW

Custom built-in cabinets with face frames, inset doors, and adjustable shelves. This project teaches professional cabinet-making techniques.

MATERIALS

  • Cabinet-grade plywood: 3/4" (4 sheets)
  • Hardwood for face frames: 1x2, 80 feet
  • Hardwood for doors: 1x3 and 1x2, 60 feet
  • Door panels: 1/4" plywood or solid wood
  • Hinges (6 pairs)
  • Shelf pins
  • Wood glue and pocket screws
  • Finish

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

Cut all plywood components for cabinet boxes.

Drill shelf pin holes using a template for consistency.

Assemble cabinet boxes with dados and rabbets.

Build face frames using pocket screws or mortise and tenon.

Attach face frames to cabinet boxes.

Build inset frame-and-panel doors.

Fit doors to openings with proper reveal (typically 1/16").

Install hinges and hang doors.

Cut and install adjustable shelves.

Scribe cabinets to wall and secure.

Apply finish to all components.

  • Build cabinets in sections for easier installation.
  • Use a story stick to ensure consistent shelf pin spacing.
  • Inset doors require precise fitting—take your time.
  • Consider soft-close hinges for a premium feel.
  • Add crown molding at the top for a finished look.

FINISHING

For built-ins, a painted finish is traditional. Use high-quality primer and paint, applying 2-3 coats and sanding between coats. For natural wood, use pre-catalyzed lacquer for a durable, professional finish.
