STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1

Cut all plywood pieces to size according to cut list.

2

Cut 3/4" wide, 3/8" deep dados in the side panels for shelves, spacing them 14 inches apart.

3

Apply edge banding to all visible plywood edges.

4

Assemble the case by gluing shelves into dados. Clamp until dry.

5

Cut a 1/4" rabbet on the back edges of sides and shelves for the back panel.

6

Build face frame using pocket screws to join rails to stiles.

7

Attach face frame to front of case with glue and brad nails.

8

Install 1/4" plywood back, securing with small brads.

9

Sand entire piece, paying special attention to face frame.

10

Apply finish of choice.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Use a dado blade for clean, flat-bottomed dados.
  • Support long plywood cuts with roller stands or a helper.
  • Ensure the case is square before the glue dries.
  • Flush-trim edge banding with a router for perfect edges.
  • Add a small chamfer to face frame edges for a refined look.

FINISHING

Sand to 220 grit. Apply stain if desired, then 3 coats of polyurethane. For painted finish, use primer and 2-3 coats of paint, sanding between coats. Consider a contrasting color for the back panel.
