STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1

Cut the board to final length of 36 inches using a miter saw for square ends.

2

Sand all surfaces starting with 120 grit, then 180 grit, and finally 220 grit.

3

Round over the front edge and both ends slightly with sandpaper for a softer look.

4

Apply your chosen finish—stain, paint, or clear coat. Follow manufacturer's instructions.

5

Let finish dry completely, usually 24 hours for oil-based, 2 hours for water-based.

6

Locate wall studs using a stud finder. Mark stud centers at desired shelf height.

7

Install floating shelf brackets according to manufacturer's instructions, ensuring they're level.

8

Slide the shelf board onto the brackets. The brackets should fit snugly into routed channels or simply support from below.

9

Secure the shelf to brackets with screws from underneath if brackets allow.

10

Check that shelf is level and securely mounted before loading with items.

EXPERT TIPS

  • Choose straight boards without warps or twists for best results.
  • Pre-drill all screw holes to prevent splitting.
  • Use a level at every step to ensure the shelf hangs straight.
  • Consider adding a small lip on the front edge for a more refined look.
  • Mount to studs whenever possible for maximum weight capacity.

FINISHING

Sand to 220 grit for a smooth surface. Apply pre-stain conditioner if using softwood like pine to prevent blotching. Follow with your choice of stain, paint, or clear finish. Apply 2-3 coats, sanding lightly between coats with 320 grit.
